Carla Grima Atelier presented her S/S’16 collection, Ophelia, on Wednesday evening at Fort St Angelo. Specializing in digital prints, she creates her patterns through watercolor techniques, photography, and digital technology. Organic inspired silhouettes and experimentation with natural hand-dyed fabrics are what makes this line unique.
An allegory of “turquoise waters, sandy coves, fresh green leaves and the blush of prickly pears,” this collection left much to be admired. Lustrous silky scarlet reds and burnt oranges were the base for intricately organic patterns of teals, blues, browns, and whites, similar to the inside of an Agate stone. Brushstroke patterns danced across washed out whites and bright coral red garments. “Inspired by crystalline forms and the glimmer of shoreline saltpans” this kaleidoscope of colors created a lavishly rich collection.
Loungewear and beachwear styles proved the line practical, chic, and comfortable. Kimono sleeve caped style tops matched the silky lounge pants worn under them. Draped and caped silk tops covered in bright organic patterns closely matched their loose fitting silky lounge pants. A robe set of separates stuck out in a solid luxurious silky scarlet red while white, violet, and shades of berry ombres colored sleeveless dresses and silk trousers. His and hers swimwear sets came out in matching whites with navy and teal brush strokes decorating the fabric.
Ophelia’s lux loungewear, a psychedelic chic set of scientifically experimental colors and relaxed silhouettes were a hit with the crowd at MFWA2016. The touch of that richly dyed silk on your skin in the heat of the summer is enough motivation to keep your eyes on designs by Carla Grima Atelier.
